Stress and Anxiety
Stress can – although it doesn’t always – lead to anxiety. It’s useful to think of stress as being caused by things in our lives – illness, bereavement, demanding career or unhealthy relationships. Anxiety, on the other hand, is the stuff that is going on inside of us – the thoughts, worry, fears and a whole range of symptoms which are triggered by specific thoughts and situations. If stress is prolonged or severe it can lead to anxiety even when that stressful situation is resolved. Many adults with anxiety lived in stressful situations as children where they were constantly on ‘red alert’ and took these behaviours with them into adulthood.
